WP2 Semantic and conceptual basis of language

Robert van Rooij is professor in Logic and Cognition, in particular in relation to the formal analysis of language, at the Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) at the faculty of science of the University of Amsterdam.

His research focuses on the analysis of meaning of natural language expressions. Earlier in his career he worked mostly on formal semantic and pragmatics, making use of formal logic and decision- and game theory. Later he enlarged his interest to philosophy of language, philosophical logic, and the evolution of language.

As a participating PI, his contribution to WP2 of Language and Interaction is to ground theories of meaning and communication from a cognitively more realistic perspective.
