WP2 Semantic and conceptual basis of language

Asifa Majid is professor of Language, Communication and Cultural Cognition at Radboud University Nijmegen, and an affiliated researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics.

Her research focuses on the nature of categories and concepts in language, in non-linguistic perception and cognition, and the relationship between them. She adopts a large-scale cross-cultural approach in order to establish which aspects of categorisation are fundamentally shared, and which language-specific. Her work is interdisciplinary, combining standardised psychological methodology, in-depth linguistic studies and ethnographically-informed description. This coordinated approach has been used to study of domains such as space, event representation and more recently the language of perception.

Asifa Maijd is dedicated to communicating her research to a broad non-specialist audience. She has presented her work on Dutch television, as well as live at various public festivals including the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Her work is featured in international newspapers, magazines, and blogs.

She is a participating PI in WP2 on semantic representation across cultures.
