Bas Bloem is professor of neurology at Radboud University Medical Centre, The Netherlands. He is Medical Director of the Parkinson Centre Nijmegen , an internationally recognized centre of excellence. He co-directs ParkinsonNet, an innovative and award-winning healthcare concept (www.parkinsonnet.nl). He is member of the IEC of the Movement Disorder Society, and is board member of The Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development.
In 2011, he was elected as National Healthcare Hero by the Ministry of Health. In 2012, he was elected Citizen of the Year for the city of Nijmegen.
Bas Bloem has two main research interests: cerebral compensatory mechanisms, especially in the field of gait & balance; and healthcare innovation, aiming to develop and scientifically evaluate patient-centred collaborative care.
Within Language in Interaction, Bas Bloem focuses on how to improve the communication between doctors and Parkinson patients by the use of innovative techniques. He is also interested in the pathophysiology and treatment of dysarthria (in particular freezing of speech) in Parkinson patients.
